Monument Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Join us in Pompano Beach for a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony celebrating a new patriotic monument built and erected by the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). Hosted by the City of Pompano Beach at the Fisher Family Pier in the heart of the Fishing Village, this free public event honors a pivotal moment in America’s fight for independence and supports America’s 250th Anniversary in 2026. The monument reflects the mission of the Sons of the American Revolution: to honor patriot ancestors, support communities, and educate and inspire future generations about the nation's founding principles.

What The Monument Honors

This monument recognizes the First Amphibious Assault by the Continental Marines, a little-known but crucial event in the struggle for American independence.

In early 1776, General George Washington urgently needed gunpowder and supplies to support the Continental Army. Intelligence reports indicated that the British had significant stores of gunpowder on New Providence Island in the Bahamas, leading to a bold mission to secure vital resources for the American cause.

On March 3, 1776, a landing force of Continental Marines and sailors went ashore near Fort Montague, marking the first amphibious landing in U.S. Navy and Marine Corps history. The following day, Fort Nassau was taken, the British flag was lowered, and the “Grand Union Flag of the United Colonies” was raised.

The mission resulted in the capture of cannons, mortars, gunpowder, and ammunition needed by the Continental Army, Navy, and Marines. Today, this monument serves as a lasting tribute and an educational landmark, helping visitors better understand the events that shaped the United States.
